As a Bellevue childhood photographer, this is one of the questions I hear most from moms with young children.
Every age feels like it comes with a “but.”
Newborns are tiny and fragile.
Toddlers are a burst of unbridled energy.
Maybe your child is in a wiggly phase, a sassy phase, or a clingy phase where leaving your side feels like it might end in tears.
I get it.
But here’s the truth: the very things that feel like hurdles right now are often the exact traits you’ll ache to remember later.
Once they outgrow the clinginess…
Once the sass softens…
Once the wobbly walk becomes a confident stride…
You’ll wish you had documented it.
So when is the best time to book your child for a studio session in Bellevue?
The short answer is: now.
The practical answer? Let’s break it down by age.
Newborn sessions are less about personality and more about preserving the newness.
As a Bellevue newborn and childhood photographer, I recommend scheduling newborn photos within the first two weeks of life — ideally between 7–14 days old.
During this window:
This stage is about tiny fingers, curled toes, and the quiet weight of them in your arms.
But birth is unpredictable. If health, recovery, or life delays things, don’t panic. Even if your baby is older than two weeks, we can absolutely adjust the session to fit their stage.
There is no “too late.” Only different.

One of the sweetest milestones for studio portraits is when your baby can sit unassisted.
If your child is around 4–5 months but not sitting yet, I usually recommend waiting just a little longer. Sitting independently opens up so much variety in a gallery.
At this stage:
Sitter sessions in my Bellevue studio are simple, joyful, and expressive. Your baby is independent enough to engage, but not yet sprinting off set.
It’s a beautiful balance.

This is the stage of proud, wobbly steps.
Early walkers might not be fully independent yet, but with Mom nearby they can confidently move from point A to point B.
These sessions feel similar to sitter sessions — but with more exploration.
We capture:
If your child is walking with light support, we unlock even more variety. They’re mobile but still easy to guide, making transitions smooth and playful.
This stage is full of energy — but still manageable energy.

Big personality. Big expressions. So much charm.
From 1–2 years old, children begin expressing themselves with:
While toddlers are mobile, they’re often less chaotic than the 3-year-old crowd. This age is perfect if you want to capture that “little kid” era right before full-blown independence kicks in.
As a Bellevue childhood photographer specializing in personality-driven studio portraits, I love this stage because it’s expressive without being overwhelming.
You start seeing who they are becoming.

This group is spirited.
They are explorers. Negotiators. Comedians.
Sessions with this age require a bit more patience — but the payoff is incredible. The personality that shines through is unmatched.
In my Lake Hills Bellevue studio, we incorporate:
And yes, this is where my studio treasure box becomes highly motivating.
This age is about fun. About laughter. About capturing them mid-movement and mid-story.
These are often the sessions where moms say, “That’s exactly them.”
You made it, Mama.
At this stage, kids can collaborate. They follow direction while still keeping things playful and natural.
There are no forced smiles in my studio.
Instead, we guide connection. We build energy. We capture real interaction.
And because they’re able to engage more intentionally, personality portraits at this age can feel especially dynamic and refined.
There isn’t one perfect age.
Each stage offers something different:
The real question isn’t “What’s the best age?”
It’s:
What will you wish you had documented a year from now?
